About Us

Welcome to the Perinatal Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, an internationally recognized facility in fetal diagnosis and counseling. The Center provides multidisciplinary care for families when a fetus with a genetic or anatomic birth defect has been identified. We are dedicated to offering high quality, state-of-the-art care in one location for both the mother and fetus/newborn.
The Prenatal Diagnostic Center, which was established in 1989 under the leadership of Frank Chervenak, MD, has been a leader in innovative fetal evaluation. A core team of fetal and pediatric experts coordinates perinatal and neonatal services. Over 5000 women are evaluated on an annual basis. Depending on the condition, a spectrum of additional specialists from areas such as cardiology, genetics, neurology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, general surgery, urology, orthopedics, and radiology are readily available for diagnosis and counseling of families. The strength of this multidisciplinary approach is to ensure a fully coordinated and comprehensive care plan that puts forth a state of the art approach to complex conditions affecting the well being of the fetus and newborn.
Our comprehensive care includes:
- Targeted sonographic evaluation of structural fetal anomalies
- Prenatal diagnostic procedures: amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), fetal blood sampling
- Ultrafast fetal MRI to pinpoint structural abnormalities
- Fetal echocardiography
- Prenatal genetic testing and counseling
- Expectant management, delivery, and postnatal care
- Neonatal intensive care in a 50-bed unit
- Medical ethics panel review
- Minimally invasive fetal surgery including thoracoamniotic and vesicoamniotic shunting
- Ultrasound
- Neurological and neurosurgical services
- Pediatric genitourinary conditions
The health care professionals at the Perinatal Center attend biweekly multidisciplinary perinatal conferences where cases are presented to discuss their management and treatment options. Obstetrics, neonatology, radiology, pediatric specialties, nursing, and genetic counseling are some of the disciplines represented at these conferences.
