Fetal Sonography

Members of the obstetric ultrasound unit at Weill Cornell have been leaders in fetal evaluation and prenatal diagnosis since the unit's inception in 1989. We have also been at the forefront in advocating that all pregnant women have access to quality ultrasound during pregnancy.
Our sonographers and maternal-fetal medicine physicians are highly skilled in evaluating fetal development, and identifying a wide variety of abnormalities. We perform detailed evaluation of fetal anatomy in the second trimester, and can identify or exclude many types of birth defects. First-trimester ultrasound, commonly performed to evaluate the risk of genetic abnormalities, has allowed us to detect some major abnormalities before the second trimester.
Comprehensive evaluation in pregnancy also involves assessment of fetal growth, the placenta, umbilical cord, and cervix. We are able to detect early evidence of complications such as fetal growth restriction, preterm labor, and placenta previa. This information can help us to achieve the goal of having healthy mothers deliver healthy babies.
All women having ultrasound in our unit have the opportunity to consult with one of our maternal-fetal medicine specialists to discuss any ultrasound findings. If complications are suspected, our physicians will work with you and your obstetrician in formulating the best plan.
